TrypTych's mandate is to provide exciting educational
opportunities for professional and non-professional performers.
The opera workshops have been held since the inception of TrypTych
and take place during the fall, winter and summer. The main focus
of the workshops is on Contemporary Opera in English.
In
the past, a summer opera workshop featured the works of musical
theater giants. Workshops include master classes by some of Canada's
finest stage directors, conductors, acting coaches, and dance
instructors. Previous master class presenters have included Allan
Monk, Jeff Hyslop, Richard Ouzounian, Wayne Strongman, Stuart
Hamilton, John Hess, John Fanning, Tom Diamond, and Brian Deedrick.
Works
have included Rigoletto, Boys from Syracuse, Most Happy Fella,
The Tales of Hoffmann, Falstaff, The Telephone, Sorry Wrong Number
and La Voix Humaine. In the summer of 2005, TrypTych held a very
successful opera workshop production of Britten’s The Beggar’s
Opera in Chichester, England.
One
of the new initiatives of the opera workshops is to develop original
one-act works by Canadian composers as part of the workshop experience.
The
TrypTych Opera Workshop is headed by Edward Franko who has been
actively involved in the field of opera for over 25 years as a
performer, producer, stage director and educator. He passionately
shares his love of the artform in a stimulating, fun, and demanding
atmosphere.
"Tryptych Productions has their pulse on the music
scene which allows them to offer workshops that excite and challenge
amateurs, young artists and professionals alike. No other company
could cover both the dark underground of Weill's Weimar Republic
and the complex urbanisms of Stephen Sondheim with equal expertise
and vigour. The staff is equipped with a staggering wealth of
knowledge attained through their experience as both performers,
educators and enthusiasts, which enables them to ignite passion
for performing and passion for music in each and every participant."
"The
two aspects of TrypTych's workshop programs that I find most appealing
are, first, the willingness to explore a wide range of musical
genres, and second, the unassuming, professional manner in which
the workshop participants are taken from first meeting to performance.
Similarly, the exchange of knowledge and methods of instruction
are straightforward and cordial. There is a great mix of learning
and fun. The combined skills and experience of the TrypTych staff
are clearly beneficial to the performers. The overall philosophy
of exploration, good humour and mutual respect made both workshop
experiences enjoyable and rewarding. Where else can you perform
Weill, Verdi and Sondheim, all with the same company?"
"This
workshop was a real growth experience for me. In only two weeks,
the "TrypTych Trio" taught me more about music-making
than I had learned over the past year. The combination of masterclasses
(and the quality of the people who led the masterclasses) and
an intense hands-on experience (culminating in a live performance)
enabled me to explore new ways of thinking about music and new
ways of interpreting it. The lessons I learned in the workshop
are ones that I will be able to put to use no matter where my
career takes me. A great experience!"
"The
Sondheim workshop gave me a wonderful opportunity to go beyond
my own comfort zone in acting , and in making the text be real.
I had a great time with the leaders and participants and learned
from each of them as well. Both of the vocal masterclasses were
terrific."
"The
workshop was in a word was amazing! There was such a great energy
in the air. Something special happens when budding artists eager
to learn mix with professionals who are not only passionate about
what they do, but also passionate about sharing their knowledge
and experience. This is very evident with TrypTych. I laughed
a lot, I learned a lot, I grew a lot. I walked away richened by
my experience and hungry for more!"
