Sondheim - the name is a household word to all music theatre afficionados. One of the most prolific, admired and emulated composer/lyricists ever to write for the musical stage, he is also one of the most enigmatic. Aloof and impersonal, he has never produced a mega-hit to rival Phantom of the Opera, My Fair Lady or Chorus Line and despite his vast output, only one song, "Send in the Clowns" even came close to being a popular hit. But in fact, Sondheim has never set out to write a hit. What he constantly does, and does brilliantly, is to challenge himself, his performers and his audience. He never writes the same work twice. As he himself says, "If you do what everyone expects, you're not doing your job". It is in this spirit that our Sondheim workshop was created and developed. The challenges posed to all participants have been enormous, but so too, presumably, are the rewards. Virtually every Sondheim show is represented in our two evenings, along with some rejects and film music. The variety of material will challenge our audience as well. The work presented at Gatsby's represents the culmination of some outstanding efforts by our master class instructors, coaches, directors and administrator, but primarily it is the result of the extreme dedication and perseverence by the participants themselves. Enjoy!
